Sustainable Development: Environment
At GAC we recognise we have a responsibility to strike the right balance between social and economic development and preservation of the natural environment. To achieve this, we invest significant time and resources to achieve environmentally and socially responsible outcomes for Guinea.
In implementing best practice environmental management, Guinea Alumina has adopted BHP Billiton's HSEC standards and biodiversity policy, as well as the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standards.
Environmental Management
Guinea Alumina Corporation environmental management plans are being developed and will cover:
- Soil erosion
- Rehabilitation
- Waste management
- Air quality
- Traffic
- Flora and fauna
- Other construction impacts.
Guinea Alumina Corporation will audit and monitor activities regularly to ensure compliance of all contractors and sub-contractors to these standards and procedures.
Critical Habitat
Our mining area is significant in size, and like many areas in Africa, is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna.
Guinea Alumina Corporation has established partnerships with the Wild Chimpanzee Foundation (WCF) and other experts to develop and implement a conservation management plan to address the presence of critical habitat for endangered species in our mining concession.
