The Guinea Alumina Project ranks as one of the largest and most significant greenfield alumina projects yet to be developed.

The Guinea Alumina Project represents an opportunity to develop an alumina refinery in the bauxite-rich region of Guinea, West Africa. The Project is one of the most advanced, new projects proposed in Guinea

Guinea Alumina Corporation’s bauxite mining concession covers 690 sq km of the Boké bauxite belt, one of the world's most prolific bauxite regions. Nineteen bauxite-bearing plateaus have been identified within the mining concession.

Since 2004, Global Alumina and Guinea Alumina Corporation have conducted an extensive program of exploration, primarily focusing on the five bauxite-bearing plateaus in close proximity to the proposed refinery site.

As a result of the Guinea Alumina Project, the proportion of bauxite processed in-country is expected to increase from some 10% to more than 40%.

Project Feasibility

Significant work has been undertaken to date to investigate and confirm the feasibility of the proposed project. These studies confirm that the Guinea Alumina Project has the potential to deliver significant and lasting benefits to shareholders, investors and the people of Guinea.

Based on the outcomes of the Definition Phase Study, the following conclusions can be made:

  • The ore body is substantial and supports a long-term operation
  • The process for alumina refining is underpinned by a proven Bayer process
  • The operating cost to produce alumina is in the lowest quartile of the industry cost curve
  • The project meets all environmental requirements, and has comprehensive plans in place to ensure ongoing compliance
  • The team that will undertake this project consists of GAC, Bechtel and other contractors, and has significant depth of experience in successful completion of complex projects globally
